The aim of this study is to report the prevalence and severity of sleep apnea in patients with AF and, secondarily, assess the accuracy and feasibility of a new home-screening device for sleep apnea (NightOwl™ by Ectosense). Using new digital-based technology is a promising solution to the underreporting of sleep apnea highlighted by academical societies in recent years. This device is recommended for persons over the age of 18.Determining the presence of modifiable risk factors for atrial fibrillation (AF), such as sleep apnea is of clinical importance due to the potential impact targeting these risk factors can have on the progression and burden of AF. Yet studies show one in 10 Australians and 2-8% of New Zealanders suffer from undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea. It also increases your risk of heart disease, elevated blood pressure, insulin resistance, and diabetes, depression, memory loss, liver problems, elevated cholesterol, decreased sexual desire (along with erectile dysfunction in men). This can leave you feeling tired in the morning and drowsy throughout the day, weakens your immune system, can lead to frequent headaches and insomnia. When your breathing stops while you’re sleeping (which is called an apnea and happens in sleep apnea and some other sleep disorders), your brain wakes you up briefly so that you start breathing again. Preventing sleep apnea's damaging effects on your body and health The sleep analysis is performed using the latest peripheral arterial tonometry, actigraphy, and oximetry technology, which measures changes in your blood oxygen level and other important metrics to accurately detect whenever your breathing is interrupted while you sleep. This is all included in the NightOwl sleep test.
